Crossing the Water
My daughter Kaitlyn and I navigated new territory through brush and open country on a long horseback ride recently. One trail led us to a running stream—enough running water for Kaitlyn’s new horse to be unsure of crossing. She gave “Parker” an opportunity to smell the water and think about dipping a hoof. All the while she applied enough pressure to make Parker realize he had no other choice. I had barely enough time to say, “You better grab your saddle horn and give him his head!” before the Palomino gelding soared over the water. He had made up his mind to cross. Over the water he went with a smiling rider and a new sense of trust between the pair. It was the highlight of the ride for Kaitlyn though minutes earlier she had suggested we take an alternative route. I was reminded of the Greek philosopher from Ephesus, Heraclitus.
“No man can cross the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
Change comes every moment of our lives. Sometimes it comes with small decisions and subtle differences. Sometimes it comes with excitement and joy. Sometimes it comes like rolling boulders flattening our plans. For better or worse, we are never the same; but God is always the same.
The God we pray to today listened to the prayers of Noah before the flood, Joseph in prison, Daniel in the lion’s den and Jesus in the garden. God’s Word says in Matthew 6:27: “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” And in Matthew 6:34: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Change will come but scripture tells us we only have to work through one day at a time.
The Bible is written for present times and is true for ALL time.
Whatever is in your path today, grab on to your saddle horn and spur your horse. God is in the leap of faith and greater trust awaits you on the other side.
